Chapter Eleven

It had been hell saying good-night to Allie. Something told me we both needed a little more time. Which meant I hadn’t been sleeping long when my phone vibrated at four a.m.

It was Brannon. What the hell?

“Hey, Buddy. Is everything okay?”

“No. Flora’s husband showed up. Scared the hell out of her and her boys.”

“Please tell me that you got to him before he had a chance to hurt them.”

He took too long to respond. I got up out of bed and headed into the kitchen in my boxers, picturing the rain in Paraguay.

“What happened?”

“Flora had taken the youngest to the bathroom. He jumped her there and got them outside. When she took too long to get back, Clay went looking for her.”

“Why didn’t she scream like we’d told her?”

“He’d picked up the boy. He said if she made any noise he’d cut the boy’s neck.” I shut my eyes and leaned against the kitchen counter. I could picture it.

“He got them into the forest. Clay and Hudson got there before he raped her, but it was only because she was fighting him off. She got cut up. The kid saw the whole thing.”

“Jesus. He was only five or six, right?”

“Six.” We were both silent for a moment. “Clay got the kid out of there before Hudson took care of things.”

I knew what that meant. “How are the locals taking things?”

“Clay got me, and I got the doc. Once he got involved, everything got smoothed over pretty quickly. The husband’s just one more poor bastard who died in the flood.”

“How’s Flora doing?”

“The cuts are mainly superficial. It’s the kid I’m worried about, he’s pretty traumatized. Not because of what Hudson did, but seeing his Dad cut up his Mom.” I started slamming my fist against the countertop.

“Declan, are you still there?”

“Yeah, I’m still here. I wish I was there.”

“You’re where you need to be. You need to hunt down that fuck and make him pay. You need to rip out his intestines. How’s Allison?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” And I didn’t. Here I was, probably starting the most intense relationship of my entire life, when some woman was getting cut up by the man she had married. I was sick of the world.

Brannon’s voice lowered. “Tell me.”

“I said I didn’t want to talk about it.” Dammit, I heard the shower start. Apparently banging my fist against the counter hadn’t been the smartest move in the world.

“She’s pretty special, isn’t she,” he prompted.

Having friends that knew you inside and out sucked.

“Brannon, I’m going to tell you, but I’m not looking to paint my nails and have a facial with you, okay?”

“Gotcha. You have a penis. I get the feeling you used it too. Hold on, I’m walking away from the smokers, I’m going to end up with lung cancer at this rate.”

I pictured him next to all of the old men whose fingertips weren’t brown but were actually yellow from the nicotine. I smiled but then I frowned. “Cut it out.
